Healthy Women: Tips for Women to maintain their health


Traditionally women’s health is a neglected issue. As sister/mother/wife, they care for others.
But it is changing. There is greater awareness.

More and more women are aware of their health problems now.Women are more proactive regarding health issues when compared to men. Be it taking care of their health or their loved ones, going to a doctor at regular intervals for checkup or following good health ideas and medications. Women nowadays have to multitask between their office work and domestic life because of which stress starts taking a toll on them. Apart from the daily stress, a woman’s body undergoes various changes such as pregnancy, labor and menopause. All these body altering changes can make a woman’s body weak and make her experience behavioural changes. Some common diseases a woman might suffer from are breast cancer, cervical cancer, heart ailments and problems of the reproductive tract.

WHEN BODY ALTERATIONS ARE SILENT…

Women unlike men are more likely to suffer silently when it comes to body altering changes; this also makes them much more prone to depression. Striking a proper balance between work and family is important for both physical and mental health. Women also tend to push themselves beyond a limit to excel in her multiple roles; being a perfect mom, a perfect wife and a perfect working professional can be extremely taxing. It is important to understand that there is nothing called ‘perfect’. One can only try and do their best. However, it is equally crucial at times to let go of things than worry all the time.

Women and Hormones

Women undergo various stages in their life where she experiences natural hormonal changes in her body. Hormonal transitions occur during puberty, pregnancy and menopause which make women prone to mood swings and depression. It is important for a woman to be aware of the various changes she will undergo due to natural hormonal changes occurring at various stages of her life as it will help her cope better.

The stage of puberty

During the stage of puberty, hormonal changes start occurring gradually which have concrete and permanent results on the female body. Hormonal changes at this point of life result in development of breasts, growth of hair in private parts and also growth in height. The process of menstruation also starts at this point. The transition that occurs in the body takes about three to four years and a girl experiences a variety of emotions. A girl has to adapt to her changing body, beginning of sexuality and onset of fertility which makes her emotionally vulnerable and confused. The pituitary gland plays an important role in this stage as it signals the body to produce hormones for development of the body and reproductive organs.

The stage of pregnancy

In pregnancy, the drop in certain hormones such as estrogen and progesterone which takes place during menstruation does not occur instead a new hormone comes into play. Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) is manufactured by the growing placenta which triggers the ovaries into manufacturing increased levels of estrogen and progesterone which would be necessary to carry a pregnancy to full term. Home pregnancy test kits are developed to find out the presence of HCG in a woman’s urine.

The stage of post-pregnancy

After childbirth the increased levels of hormones decline sharply which causes a number of physical and emotional changes. The body starts functioning like earlier but due to the changes in hormonal levels, postpartum depression is a common phenomenon in certain women.
